Kobe Bryant Is A Barcelona Man

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Kobe BryantThe L.A. Laker guard joins Kevin Garnett as another pro basketballer that supports footie. Kobe throws love to FC Barcelona as does his teammate Pau Gasol, who keeps Bryant in the loop of all the La La Liga happenings. Their other teammate, Sasha Vujacic, supports Madrid…I’ll assume he means Real and not Atletico.

I remember reading somewhere that US basketball players hung out with some global football stars in the Olympic village during the 2008 Olympics, and that some great friendships came out of this. This is probably why there’s been an upswing in American sports figures throwing love to football. But to give Bryant his due (and he brings this up in the story), he grew up in Italy and was surrounded by footie during his impressionable years. So I believe that his football love is genuine.

My Barca-loving wife despises Kobe so this story didn’t exactly make her happy. It’s courtesy of the L.A. Times but it’s part of an upcoming article in ESPN Magazine.

Elton John Runs a Footie club! (well, he used to)

Elton John
Well, I started to blog to learn something new about football every day. I think this post counts.

Apparently Elton John has been very involved with the Championship League-based Watford FC for over three decades. He was once an owner and then was named life president, a title he held until a few days ago. Due to the clubs lackluster performance and the manner in which the team is currently managed, Sir Elton has decided that he “cannot remain in any formal position within the club.”

I Googled this subject after I read this article and as this picture suggests, John definitely knows his footie. I saw a lot of quotes for him where he’s complaining about the club sacking good managers and making bad transfer decisions and couldn’t find one where he’s complaining that the team wasn’t playing enough “sexy football” like Roman Abramovich did with Chelsea. Plus, Watford made it to both the FA Cup and UEFA cup during Elton’s involvement with the club. The way I see it, no one should playa hate Elton on this.

Kevin Garnett rides with Chelsea

Football,Chelsea

I am NO Celtics fan…no way, shape, or form. And while I respect Kevin Garnett’s game AND his 2008 NBA Championship ring, I’ve never really followed his game: either now or during his run with the the Minnesota Timberwolves. But his devotion to footie AND Chelsea means I now have to watch at least five Celtic games this season. Kay Gee’s devotion is nicely laid out in this ESPN Soccernet article that I found via the Real Recognize Real blog.

EPL Talk also has a thread on this as well as a clip of him receiving the personalized 08/09 Chelsea jersey he’s sporting in this picture. He says to his presenter “You made my day man!”

With a comment like that, I may have to watch at least 10 games now.
