Barca Getting Rid of Henry?!?!?!

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Thierry Henry
The flame thrower, make your peeps afraid to know ya.

How many times I told ya, “play your position” small soldier

Gangstarr – “Full Clip”

It’s now one of those rare moments where I post a transfer rumor and I refuse to believe that it’s true. But if it’s true, then it’s tied to a recent football learning experience of mine so I need to get my feelings out on the subject ASAP!!!!!

It’s rumored that FC Barcelona will unload striker Thierry Henry. Supposedly, they’ll try to dump the ex-Arsenal man while simultaneously attempting to snag current Arsenal man, Cesc Fabregas.

I spoke to my Barca-loving wife prior to posting this and if it’s true (and again, “if”), then she’s fine with it. Henry’s rumored to have an arrogant streak and she’s not a big fan of arrogant players (hates Cristiano Ronaldo). She also feels that he only scores when he wants to and that there are other players that can easily fill his Barcelona role, so he’s not as special as many think he is, including himself.

Maybe. But in an old Manchester United post, I stated that United in its current form is unbeatable, partially due to its scoring armada of a lot of forwards and attacking midfielders. Barcelona is Man U’s Spanish counterpart in this sense and Henry, I feel, has gone above and beyond in contributing to this makeup.

And there’s more. As I spend this season painfully observing the two teams I support, Real Madrid and Chelsea, I’ve learned that a whole bunch of new players doesn’t mean that that the team will immediately start to win. I’ve watched Madrid bring in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Rafael van der Vaart and other “good” players in the hopes that they’ll win games for the team. And although Madrid’s on is winning right now, the value of the contributions from the new guys is questionable. Huntelaar has rarely played since he came over and van der Vaart’s been benched a lot lately. With this, it’s tough for me to make the case that these new additions deserve a whole lot of credit for Real Madrid’s current winning streak.

And Chelsea? Well, Nicolas Anelka’s been making me eat my words all season. I’ve implied that the striker has been of no value to Chelsea since he came aboard last year. Fast forward to now and he’s the current leading scorer in the English Premier League!!!!! I’ll be touching on my Anelka mistake in (maybe) my next post.

I’ve learned that it takes time for a player to get accustomed to a new team in footie, so Thierry Henry is no different from Huntelaar, van der Vaart and Anelka in this respect. He had a crappy season last year, putting the ball in the back of the net on the rarest of occasions. Now look at him…kicking a** alongside Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi. And speaking of Messi, he may be putting in some awesome strike work for Barcelona now, but remember that he barely caused a ripple for the team for the two years prior. He was given time to find himself.

Thierry Henry is consistently delivering results for FC Barcelona in the results-oriented business that is football. FCB needs to let this small soldier stay where he is and let him play his position.

Okay…he’s 6′2″ so he’s not that small. But the opening Gangstarr quote fits in nicely anyway.

Transfer Rumor: Michael Owen To The L.A. Galaxy

Monday, January 26th, 2009

In a rare instance of my posting a transfer rumor, I’ll post this story, courtesy of JustSoccerJerseys.com

Newcastle United’s Michael Owen is being pursued by (gasp) the L.A. Galaxy. After the way the N.U. has performed this year, I don’t blame in and don’t think he can do any worse. However, I think he should pass on the offer as he has the chops to go to a better team.

dos Santos may go to Chelsea

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

This blog obviously doesn’t spend a lot of time on transfer rumors but because it involves a team that I support, I’ll mention this story.

Goal.com reports that ex-Barcelona, current Tottenham midfielder Giovanni dos Santos is rumored to have caught the eye of Luiz Felipe Scolari for a possible transfer to the Blues during the January transfer window. This rumor was also around this summer so it’s a bit lukewarm.

Personally, I think Chelsea needs a top-notch striker before it needs a midfielder but Gio’s still got talent. I’d be happy if he went to Stamford Bridge.

Sergios Ramos rumoured to be leaving Real Madrid

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Sergio Ramos
So says Transfer Market Web. Ramos has been very central to Real Madrid’s defense and I think they’ll fight to keep him so I’ll believe it when I see it.

Chelsea, along with Man City, is listed as a possible suitor so that’s good news for me. Chelsea can certainly use him right now but, again, I’ll believe it when I see it.

Only posting this because I’m a Chelsea guy…

Tottenham looking at Cesar

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Ok, what am I missing here?

Tottenham Hotspur are contemplating bringing Real Zaragoza goalie Cesar into the squad. They were looking at Stephen Bywater from Derby County until Spurs manager Juande Ramos switched gears.

Just so I’m clear: the Spurs have had an EXTREMELY successful transfer season this summer. They’ve already added Giovanni dos Santos, Gilberto, David Bentley and there’s a chance that David Villa may be transfered over. After adding that fire power to a squad that already has Dimitar Berbatov and Didier Zakora, now they’re looking to bring in keepers from recently-relegated teams. And one one of them, Derby County, went through a VERY high-profile relagation this year with their poor playing-so poor that they were nicknamed “the ATM for three points.”

Look, do the Spurs stand a chance of getting Iker Casillas? Of course not, but that doesn’t mean that they should set the bar lower. I say look at Warren that used to play for Reading. Yes, Reading was relegated this year but Warren was a reserve so you can’t blame him for Reading’s drop. To see his potential, find a replay of their 07/08 season opener against Arsenel and see how he did. Warren gave up two goals as the game was winding down but he has potential, and potential should be good enough for Tottenham right now.

I said in an earlier post that I’m looking to the Spurs to take the fifth spot in the EPL this season. I will recant that if their upper management keeps doing dumb stuff like this.

Random News 8/6/08 (FIFA, Platini, Setanta, Eto’o, Bundesliga)

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Because or their strong showing in this year’s Euro Cup, Russia’s back in Fifa after 11 years. Good for them!!!

Spekaing of FIFA, I just found this great bio on FIFA grand puba Michel Platini.

Kind of a wierd article here. Shane O’Rourke, head of Setanta North America, feels that the 50,000 Setanta subscribers in Canada will watch EPL games that the channel broadcasts instead of the Olympics. “My feeling is anybody who’s buying our channel is watching our channel. After all, they’re paying for it”, he says. Well, yeah they’re paying for it but the article makes no mention of polling data on this subject. And let’s not for get that this is a Tivo/DVR/time-shifted world where people can actually record games and watch them later.

FC Barcelona claims that Samuel Eto’o wants out of the club. I tend to ignore transfer rumours (all the Cristiano Ronaldo stuff annoyed me) but since the article lists Chelsea as one of the front runners to get him, I care about this one.

Sponsorship cash continues to flow into the Bundesliga, and at an increasing rate. Hopefully, teams other than Bayern Munich can use it to snag good players to win a league trophy.

Random News 8/3/08 (Gol TV, Bojan Krkic, Messi, Ronaldo)

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Just some things that I found…very interesting:

GAME OF THE DAY: Arsenal v. Real Madrid in a Emirates Cup game on GOL TV at 11AM EST.

Also according to their homepage (which is kinda buggy right now along with the rest of the site), GOL TV will no longer be available on Dish TV, which is a BIG problem for me. But I just checked and it’s on right now, so I dunno. Needless to say, I will have some SERIOUS issues if this happens and WILL consider breaking my contract for a move to DirectTV if this is true. Will call Dish later on today to confirm this. TV rights football have a very interesting role in the business of Soccer-I don’t fully understand this role so I’ll be researching it more and more. (Courtesy GOL TV).

Apparently, Arsene Wenger has expressed interest in Barcelona teen wunderkind Bojan Krkic. As Krkic came up through the Barcelona youth league, Bojan isn’t leaving them anytime soon if you ask me. Still, it must be nice for Bojan to be wanted and to get recognition as a great player from some like Wenger (Courtesy FC Barcelona Blog)

Speaking of Barcelona, Xinhua News Agency discuss how Lionel Messi will be joining Boca Juniors star Juan Roman Riquelme in the midfield of the Argentinian Olympic Soccer team. It’s a general news article BUT it hyped me to the fact the Argentina’s first games is against the Ivory Coast. So it’s Messi/Riquelme/Mascherano/Gago/Aguero vs. Cissé/Eboué/Kalou/Touré/Zokora. That’ll be good. (Courtesy Xinhua News Agency),

Setanta’s got a story that Ronaldo (the Brazilian one) may move to the Premier League. With this, all he’ll have to do is join a Bundesliga squad afterwards and he’ll have played in every marquee football league. Unfortunately the link’s broken as of this post. Will remove it if things don’t shape up (Courtesy Setanta)
